How Manual Transmissions Work
A manual gearbox is a mechanical system. It uses gears that slide along shafts and lock together to change the car’s speed and power. There are very few electric parts, so most problems are caused by physical damage.
Manual gearboxes usually fail due to things like oil leaks, dirty oil, worn or broken gears, damaged synchronisers, bad bearings, or clutch problems.
What happens inside a manual gearbox when you shift gears?
When you press down the clutch pedal, it disconnects the gearbox from the engine. However, the gears are spinning at different speeds on their shafts. If they tried to lock together immediately, they would grind or break.
Synchronisers act like small friction brakes to match the gear speed. Once they spin at the same speed, they can slide into place easily to lock a new gear without resistance or damage.
This can only happen if all the moving parts are properly lubricated and kept cool by the right oil. If the oil is kept clean, without leaks, and the gearbox is not abused, it can easily last 100,000 to 200,000 miles, or even longer. Oil filters must also be replaced during oil changes.
How Automatic Transmissions Work
Modern automatic transmissions use a computer called a TCU or ECU to control the gear shifts. To pick the right gear, it checks the engine speed, how hard you press the accelerator, and how fast the gears are turning.
What happens inside an automatic transmission?
Instead of a clutch and gears on shafts, automatic transmissions use a torque converter, oil pump, valve body, solenoids, clutch rings and bands.
Unlike a manual gearbox, it’s one gear system with many moving parts. Inside the housing are stacks of alternating discs, called clutch packs, and inside a ring gear, small gears move around a central gear.
This system looks like the sun with planets around it, so they are called planetary gears. All of these parts are constantly touching, but allowing the gears to spin freely when the car is idling.
To change the vehicle’s power and speed, the transmission doesn’t move the gears. Instead, pressurised fluid pushes certain parts together with clutch rings and bands while allowing others to spin freely.
Because of this complexity, there is more that can go wrong, but with new technology, they are much more reliable. With proper maintenance and normal driving, they can last 100,000 to 150,000 miles and sometimes as long as the car.
An automatic transmission depends much more heavily on clean and sufficient fluids to work properly, and you need to check the levels frequently and flush the system at intervals prescribed by the manufacturer.

Even though both types can last the same distance, the maintenance and repairs are very different.
On a manual gearbox, the clutch is the weakest link. The oil is used only for lubrication and cooling and needs to be changed once or twice over its lifespan.
On automatic vehicles, the transmission fluid works much harder and needs to be topped up regularly and changed every 60,000 to 100,000 miles. On heavy-duty vehicles, the fluid needs to be changed every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. If you don’t flush the system at prescribed intervals, the fluid will turn into a thick, gritty sludge that can ruin the gearbox.
