NEW BMW X6 UNVEILED

The first BMW X6 was released back in 2008, and at the time proved to be a bit of a Marmite car, people either loved it or loathed it. Fortunately for BMW over a quarter of a million motorists that loved it brought one.

As with any new generation of a model BMW, have announced a whole raft of improvements. It will be more economical, you’ll have more room to wiggle your legs, and you’ll have more equipment to get confused by. The overall shape of the X6 remains the same, but BMW have incorporated lots of new styling cues found on their newer models, which brings the X6 in to line with the rest of their model range. Whilst many changes are fairly minor, the overall effect makes the revised shape appear much sharper than its predecessor.

The interior is in line with all current BMW interiors, with similar styling throughout, and with the iDrive system taking centre stage. The well equipped motor features everything you’d expect in a luxury SUV, dual zone climate control, leather seats, LED interior lighting etc. BMW have also tried to make the car a little more practical, and have increased the boot load space by a further 10 litres over its predecessor.

There is going to be a choice of four engines altogether, 1 petrol and 3 diesels, but the third diesel engine won’t be available until 2015. So if you can’t wait a year for the full choice, you’ll get to pick from the 4.4L V8 petrol engine, or one of the two smaller diesel engines, one with turbochargers and one without. 4WD comes as standard, as does an automatic 8-speed gearbox. Prices start from just a shade over 50K for the base model, and rise to over 65K for the bigger engine variants. As with all luxury cars, expect an expensive options list as long as your arm.

The luxury SUV market is a hotly contested one, and the X6 will find itself going up against opponents such as the new (and brilliant) Range Rover Sport, and the Porsche Cayenne. So will the improvements be enough to tempt people away from these more established models? We’re not so sure, but maybe the exclusivity helps to add to its appeal.

According to BMW: ‘Powerful and athletic: with the presence of an X model and the sportiness of a coupé, the BMW X6 has incredible versatility.’
